Book Description

The Poison Belt is a science fiction novella by Arthur Conan Doyle, first published in 1913. It is the second book in the Professor Challenger series, following The Lost World.

In this story, the brilliant but eccentric Professor Challenger gathers his companions—journalist Edward Malone, Lord John Roxton, and Professor Summerlee—at his home to witness a global catastrophe. Earth is passing through a mysterious “poison belt” of ether, causing widespread suffocation and apparent death. As civilization collapses, the group seals themselves in a room with an oxygen supply, observing the eerie silence of the outside world.

Filled with suspense and philosophical reflections on humanity, The Poison Belt is an intriguing early apocalyptic tale that explores themes of scientific discovery, human resilience, and the fragility of civilization.

About Author

Arthur Conan Doyle

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was a British writer, physician, and creator of the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, he studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, where he began writing stories in his spare time.

Doyle gained worldwide fame with A Study in Scarlet (1887), the first novel featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. His detective stories, including The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and The Hound of the Baskervilles, became some of the most influential works in crime fiction.

Beyond Holmes, Doyle wrote historical novels, science fiction, and supernatural tales. He was also deeply involved in spiritualism later in life. Despite trying to move beyond his detective stories, Holmes remains his most enduring legacy, shaping modern mystery fiction.
