Book Description

In The Cruise of the Sally D, James Otis takes us aboard the battered schooner Sally D, where young Sam Cushing struggles under the harsh command of his step-father, Captain Doak. Life at sea on the rugged Maine coast is full of storms, hardship and injustice—yet when Sam befriends the wise lobster-catcher Uncle Ben, a path toward hope and self-respect opens. Determined to escape the tyranny of the ship and chart a better course, Sam’s journey becomes one of courage, resilience and redemption. Rich in maritime atmosphere and moral insight, this boy-hood adventure captures both the salt-spray of the sea and the beating heart of a young man discovering what it means to be free.
