Book Description

Imago is the third and final novel in the Xenogenesis (also published as Lilith’s Brood) trilogy by Octavia E. Butler. The novel centers on Jodahs, the first human–Oankali construct born on Earth, whose emerging identity destabilizes both species. As Jodahs comes into their transformative abilities, they must learn to control them in order to survive and help shape a new future for humanity. The story explores identity, transformation, consent, and coexistence, bringing Butler’s meditation on genetic trade and survival to a powerful conclusion.

About Author

Octavia E. Butler was an American author widely regarded as one of the most important and influential voices in Science Fiction and Speculative Fiction. Born in 1947 in Pasadena, California, Butler grew up shy and dyslexic, turning to reading and writing at an early age. She studied at community college and later attended writing workshops, including the Clarion Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers’ Workshop, where she honed her craft.

Butler rose to prominence with novels such as Kindred, Patternmaster, and the Parable series, works celebrated for their bold exploration of race, gender, power, hierarchy, and survival. Her fiction often centers Black protagonists and examines humanity’s capacity for change in the face of violence, environmental collapse, and social inequality. In 1995, Butler became the first science fiction writer to receive a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship. Her legacy continues to shape contemporary speculative literature, inspiring generations of writers to challenge genre boundaries and imagine more inclusive futures.
