About Author

Johanna Spyri (1827–1901) was a Swiss author best known for writing Heidi, one of the most enduring and beloved works of Children’s Literature. She was born Johanna Louise Heusser in the village of Hirzel, near Zürich, Switzerland.

Spyri spent much of her adult life in Zürich, where she began writing relatively late, initially producing stories for children and young adults that emphasized family, morality, and the healing power of nature. Published in 1881, Heidibrought her international fame for its vivid portrayal of life in the Swiss Alps and its themes of compassion, resilience, and emotional growth.

Although Spyri wrote more than 50 stories, Heidi remains her defining achievement, securing her legacy as a foundational figure in European Children’s Literature.
