J. R. Ward (born 1969) is an American author best known for her long-running paranormal romance series The Black Dagger Brotherhood. She was born in the United States and earned degrees in history and law, working in healthcare administration before becoming a full-time writer.

Ward writes under the pen name J. R. Ward for paranormal romance and urban fantasy, while also publishing contemporary romance under her real name, Jessica Bird. Her work is known for blending intense romance with action, mythology, and emotional trauma, often featuring flawed, battle-scarred protagonists.

Since the publication of Dark Lover in 2005, Ward has become a major figure in modern Paranormal Romance, with many of her novels appearing on bestseller lists and helping to shape the tone of darker, more character-driven romantic fantasy.
